If there are several locations each may be at a different address. The computer is at the head office so that there is no physical connection to the point of sale registers the computer and cash registers can be connected to each other through a modem link.
The computer then dials up the modem at the remote site which is connected to the master cash register, the rest of the point of sales terminals are wired back to the master cash register, it then polls each machine individually through the master terminal.
